Mekhong River Tour

On my last full day in Sakon, my friends decided to take me on a tour of the border, which is also the Mekhong River. We made a trip north from Sakon to Bueng Kan, a newly formed province, and then we traveled along the river until we got to Nakhorn Phanom province. There we turned back toward Thailand's interior to get to Sakon.

This map, created by Google Maps, shows our route. The red place marker is over Kham Ta Kla, the small town where one of my friends lives. Point B is Bueng Kan, and Point C is Nakhon Phanom. A & D are both Sakon.

This one is taken from the riverfront in Bueng Kan. You can see mountains in Laos across the river.

Bueng Kan must get a lot of Laotian people. The signs in the Tesco Lotus (Wal-mart style store) were written in Thai with a Lao translation. Usually they have English.

 Somewhere between Bueng Kan and Nakhorn Phanom, we stopped at a scenic overlook.

 The rice fields were just being planted below us.

 Beautiful weather.

 This was in Nakhorn Phanom province, near where two rivers join and create an odd effect where the water is two colors. We didn't get to see that, though.

And here we met the mile marker for Nakhorn Phanom just as it was getting dark. It's a large mile marker.
