The Night Before Thanksgiving

It was a dark and stormy night when our hero remembered he didn't have class in the morning. Accompanying that realization came an impulsive urge to make a midnight run... But for what???

Chinese food? It wasn't that kind of an urge. Denny's? No... he had already eaten dinner. A candy bar? Perhaps, but his sidekick was allergic to chocolate. Ahhh! A donut! Not just any donut, but the elusive, the legendary, the tasty Dunkin' Donut!

Questions plagued his mind. What dangers might befall him outside the safety of his gated community? Where could he find a Dunkin' Donut? If he found the fabled store would it be open at this hour? Most importantly, with the ceaseless abundance of choices, which donut might he choose?

With his sidekick by his side (where else would he be?) our hero began his perilous trek into the wilds to find his donut.

Immediately the two found themselves met by a dog which attempted to place itself beneath the tires of the intrepid Corolla carrying our heroes. With some daring driving, the Corolla avoided turning a schnauzer into a chore for the groundskeepers. Yet the event brought new contemplation: Was this journey fated to fail from the very beginning? Did the small dog foresee dangers ahead and valiantly try to warn the travelers in the only way he could?

Nevertheless, they pushed onward. Beyond the Target, whose lights were dimmed. Past a Chick-Fil-A, boasting of a new 2008 calendar. Sweeping by Boston Market's cheery sign. The hunt for Dunkin' Donuts continued.

Finally, there in the distance, through the rain and the wind and the flurry of falling leaves, they spied it: the elusive donut shop. Yet, as they drew closer, something troubled them. There were no cars in the parking lot. Could it be? After such a journey, had the shopkeep already closed for the night?

Praise be, it was just a slow spell. The two explorers entered; a bell alerted the shopkeep who stood between our hero and his Boston Creme delight. "Would you like a dozen?" He asked.
"I only need 1/2 dozen, thank you." Phew, dodged a bullet there.

After choosing their donuts and exchanging some coins for the precious cargo, the hero and his sidekick returned to the Corolla, believing their adventure was almost over.

Yet as they left the parking lot, the soft sounds of Colbie Caillat rising from the radio, a security guard looking onward, they saw a challenge. A bus was headed right for them. As it careened out of control towards our heroes they did the only thing they could do. The Corolla's 4-cylinders of power surged, the wheels squealed on the road, the the car jumped forward. The heroes escaped carrying the priceless donut treasure, and they turned toward home.

Thus it was that the Night before Thanksgiving midnight donut run of '07 was a success, reminding us all of the importance of being grateful for midnight donut runs.

[Disclaimer: Certain artistic license has been employed in this report of the Night Before Thanksgiving. The wheels really did squeal, though.]

My favorite line of the whole story:

"With some daring driving, the Corolla avoided turning a schnauzer into a chore for the groundskeepers."
